About Sussex Mammal Group

Sussex Mammal Group (SMG) is a group formed of individuals undertaking work on a voluntary basis aiming to:

§       Promote, develop and undertake surveys of mammals across Sussex

§       Engage and train volunteers to record mammal sightings and undertake surveys

§       Raise awareness of the county's mammals and promote their conservation

Personal Data

An individual's confidentiality is protected by the Data Protection Act 1998, the General Data Protection Regulation 2018 and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2016.

This policy sets out the collection and processing of Personal Data carried out by SMG. SMG may review and edit this policy periodically - any changes will be posted on the SMG website

The Personal Data SMG may hold about you include contact details (name, email address, postcode etc), records of which events you have attended, and whether there are specific areas of SMG activity that you are interested in (e.g. surveys, talks or general interest in SMG).

Why SMG collects Personal Data

SMG needs to know your basic personal data to keep in touch and provide you with information about activities that contribute to SMG aims, such as courses, surveys and events.

What SMG does with Personal Data

Personal Data are used by SMG to keep in touch about its activities. SMG will use Personal Data supplied to send:

§       Notices of SMG surveys, meetings, newsletters and events

§       Notices of other local surveys, meetings, newsletters and events that relate to SMG aims

§       Requests for information relating to survey work (e.g. hazel dormouse monitoring) that relate to SMG aims

If you choose to share your Personal Data with SMG, you can let SMG know what area of its activity specifically interests you (this preference will be stored as part of your Personal Data), or opt to receive all updates.

You can opt out of any or all SMG contact at any time and request that SMG deletes Personal Data held about you by emailing

SMG does not share your Personal Data with third parties. Personal Data is held securely in a password protected database, accessible only to authorised members of SMG committee. SMG will review the information it holds and delete anything that is no longer relevant.

You can request to see what information SMG holds about you, subject to proof of identity. If you do not feel SMG is processing your Personal Data in a satisfactory manner, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
